For the last 26 years, the Classical Association of New England has presented the CANE Summer Institute: a full week of classes, of lectures by first class scholars and of academic fellowship on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover NH, during July. The program for 2008 which runs from July 7th through the 12th, addresses the idea of revolution in all its aspects in the classical world, and the continuing influence of ancient thinkers and revolutionaries on the many revolutionary movements—in politics, art, literature and scholarship—in our own time. This year’s title reflects this: "Revolution and Reaction: Radical Changes and Continuities in the Ancient World."
There will be ten public lectures on classical literature, ancient history, classical art, and political philosophy. There will also be a variety of courses dealing with history, literature, philosophy, art and politics, in addition to the Greek and Latin languages. Join us to learn from colleagues as well as from the formal lectures and courses; meet, question, and challenge the lecturers and teachers outside the classroom, over meals taken in common and in the residences in which many of us will live for the week.
The CANE Summer Institute is open to all people who are interested in the topic. While it is true that most of the students are teachers of Latin, English, History and Art in high schools, there have also been lawyers, actors, university professors and high school juniors. The atmosphere of the institute is one of openness and collegiality.
Please come to the CANE Summer Institute 2008 for a week of renewal, intellectual stimulation and good fellowship. You can view the CANE 2008 Summer Institute website is available at: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~classics/CANE/2008/Index2.html.
